Description
The culminating event of FILM@4CNM features a copresentation with ROVA Rova:Arts with filmmaker and musicians in personELECTRIC ASCENSION
(2013 68 minutes John Rogers; SF premiere)
Hailed in 1965 as "the most powerful human sound ever recorded," yet also "the most vexatious work in jazz history," John Coltrane's Ascension has always been controversial - and famed for its scale and raw emotional power. Re-imagined and rearranged for live performance by an ensemble of present-day master musicians, led by the Rova Saxophone Quartet, Electric Ascension shows that over the decades this Coltrane masterwork has only gained more power.
CLEANING THE MIRROR
(2013 45 minutes John Rogers)
This exploration of the musical history and creative process behind Electric Ascension includes musical excerpts, archival photos, and candid footage. Musicians speak about their inspiration, their approach to the music, and their connection to Coltrane. Featuring Nels Cline, Andrew Cyrille, Art Davis, Jason Kao Hwang, Eyvind Kang, Rova, Jenny Scheinman, and Elliot Sharp.
