Description

Before San Jose's Doobie Brothers had even discovered Michael McDonald, the poor guy was locked away in a studio somewhere, recording backing vocals for Steely Dan. Knowing what we know now about that group's tortured studio process, McDonald's time on the Doobies' hit album Minute By Minute must have felt like a tropical vacation. In any case, long after he became a solo star, McDonald re-connected with Steely co-founder Donald Fagan for a series of concerts (produced by Fagan's wife) called The New York Rock and Soul Revue. The shows also featured Boz Scaggs, and a few other musicians, with the artists doing some of their hit songs and joining up on other tunes like the Rascals' "People Got to Be Free." McDonald returned to his Steely Dan roots, joining Fagan on "Pretzel Logic." In 2010, McDonald, Fagan and Scaggs reunited for the Dukes of September Rhythm Revue, once again doing some of their own songs and a few covers. - Steve Palopoli sanjose.com
