Description

Lies You Can Dance To investigates the absence of truth in American political culture and how this resonates kinesthetically in the bodies of our citizens. An aerial work that ironically takes place mostly on the ground, aided by a custom designed apparatus and props to move the narrative along, Lies, says ODC Theater Director Rob Bailis, is Kreiter's most luscious and ironic use of gravity to date. Composer Beth Custer has designed an original score that integrates found speech, country western music, and the fluid musicality of the clarinet while visual artists David Fredrickson and Sean Riley have designed a field of suspended objects. While the Bush administration gets its fair share of attention, Lies traces a wider arc by linking the roots of deception to the beginnings of the country. Color Me America, a new performance piece by Butoh artist Ledoh, explores the cumulative effect of constant low-grade threats and small-scale manipulations through the use of sustained tension, explosive punctuations and expansive tempos. As an artist who came to this country fleeing the ethnic cleansing of his Ka-Ren people at the hands of the Burmese military dictatorship, Ledoh has personal knowledge of both violent oppression and the new immigrants archetype of America as a land of freedom. This three-part work exposes contradictions inherent in our national identity. This performance is part of the ODC Theater Festival FOR THE RECORD.
