When we walked in, everyone was at the back. Tres Gringos in San Jose is a decent-size club, and yet the crowd was squished in the rear of the building. As we got closer we realized that everyone was on the tiny dance floor. More »

Mosaic is not the only bar with bocce. If you head over to Los Gatos, Campo di Bocce has indoor and outdoor bocce courts as well as an Italian restaurant. I could definitely see coming back on a warm night and tossing the bocce balls around while sipping on some fruity drink. It’s always nice to be outside. More »

Stephanie Griest talks about her new book
By Colleen Watson (Mar 20, 2009)
In her new travel book/memoir, Stephanie Elizondo Griest brings to life a Mexico that most people don’t know. Griest begins her journey as an outsider who seems to feel almost apologetic that she’s not Mexican—she grew up in south Texas in a blended family. Her mother’s parents were from Mexico. Her grandmother never learned English, and growing up Griest didn’t know enough Spanish to communicate with her. More »
A visit to JJ's Blues in Santa Clara
By Colleen Watson (Mar 20, 2009)
The lone singer was bathed in soft red light, an acoustic guitar perched on his knee. He swayed to a mellow beat and sad lyrics. Gene Washington, also known as Mr. Blues, sat on a stool on the raised stage at venerable blues haven JJ’s Blues, a snifter of brandy in his hand. More »
A night at the Saddle Rack in Fremont
By Colleen Watson (Mar 15, 2009)
Women and men circled the dance floor; it was a sea of tight jeans and cowboy hats. They moved in unison, dipping and twirling to a country twang. Boots tapped in time next to sneakers and stilettos. The Saddle Rack in Fremont was packed. The floor was filled with people learning the latest line dance; the rest of the bar was just full. More »
Local clubs light up the night with flaming libations
By Colleen Watson (Mar 11, 2009)
Heated air brushed across my face as the flames flew from the bartender’s mouth with a fiery rumble. In the midst of this incendiary spectacle were four shots topped with 151 rum. After the bright yellow ball had disappeared, little blue flames continued to wobble on top of the drinks. More »
City Lights has fun with 'The Three Musketeers'
By Colleen Watson (Mar 01, 2009)
There is a good chance that the whole reasoning behind City Lights’ production of "The Three Musketeers" was to stage some sword fights. Barely five minutes go by without a rapier being pulled and a lot of twirling and jumping about. But this wasn’t just boys with sticks, this was a testament to the knowledge of Kit Wilder, the fight director, whose realistic sword duels were the icing on the cake of an already fun play. More »
Local bars offer brain-stumping trivia nights
By Colleen Watson (Mar 01, 2009)
We stared blankly at the black-and-white photos. We needed to identify these supposedly famous people, but we were giving a rather pathetic showing. I had dragged my friend to Campbell for Quiz Night at Katie Bloom’s. I had never been to this particular incarnation, but I had been to a quiz night at Trials in San Jose that I thoroughly enjoyed. More »
An evening at a hookah lounge means more than just inhaling
By Colleen Watson (Mar 01, 2009)
We stepped into the dimly lit shop and looked around. Hookah Nites Cafe in San Jose, looked like a cross between a trendy cafe and a faux harem. There were about 10 purple velvet couches placed in cozy little groups. The faint aroma of tobacco hung in the air. More »
