Brian Regan brings off-kilter sense of humor to Montalvo show
By Steve Palopoli (Aug 28, 2009)
BRIAN REGAN doesn’t understand why people keep laughing at him. It’s not that he doesn’t think he’s funny. He just thinks laughter is overrated. More

A local standup plans to record his first album at Sonoma Chicken Coop
By Staff (Nov 11, 2009)
DECIDING on a career in comedy took some soul-searching for standup Mike Betancourt, who headlines “A Special Night of Comedy” this week at Sonoma Chicken Coop. Betancourt, who was born and raised in San Jose, served in the Navy from 1999 until 2004 on the USS Theodore Roosevelt during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. After the Navy, he attended West Valley College for two years before switching to Sacramento City College for a semester. More

A night at the Saddle Rack in Fremont
By Colleen Watson (Apr 14, 2009)
Women and men circled the dance floor; it was a sea of tight jeans and cowboy hats. They moved in unison, dipping and twirling to a country twang. Boots tapped in time next to sneakers and stilettos. The Saddle Rack in Fremont was packed. The floor was filled with people learning the latest line dance; the rest of the bar was just full. More

By Gary Singh (Jun 24, 2009)
This Sunday marks the final blowout gig at one of downtown San Jose’s most popular dive bars and longstanding supporters of live underground music, Johnny V’s. The address of 31 E. Santa Clara St. will never be the same. More

Local clubs light up the night with flaming libations
By Colleen Watson (Apr 7, 2009)
Heated air brushed across my face as the flames flew from the bartender’s mouth with a fiery rumble. In the midst of this incendiary spectacle were four shots topped with 151 rum. After the bright yellow ball had disappeared, little blue flames continued to wobble on top of the drinks. More

THURSDAY is basically the first night of the weekend. You can stay out late and have some fun and then power through the eight hours of work until the real weekend begins. And the Cardiff Lounge in Campbell is there to help kick off the pseudo first weekend night with Foxy, the best dance party in Campbell. More

An evening at a hookah lounge means more than just inhaling
By Colleen Watson (Mar 31, 2009)
We stepped into the dimly lit shop and looked around. Hookah Nites Cafe in San Jose, looked like a cross between a trendy cafe and a faux harem. There were about 10 purple velvet couches placed in cozy little groups. The faint aroma of tobacco hung in the air. More

Our roving scenester samples the wares at San Jose's high-end sake bar
By Staff (Jul 23, 2009)
MOST OF my experiences with sake were back in my college days, and they involved a Japanese steakhouse, a beer, a shot of sake, a really loud group of drinkers and a lot of chugging. This is not what you’ll find at the Koji Sake Lounge in downtown San Jose. The minimalist interior suggests a more upscale atmosphere, and a wall of sake bottles behind the bar suggests that you actually try to taste the sake instead of just shooting it. More

A touch of New Orleans food and blues right in San Jose
By Staff (Nov 17, 2009)
THE SOUTH BAY seems to be getting more and more places to listen to good music. They are sprouting up in little corners where you don’t expect them. One newer venue that is trying to bring good blues to San Jose is Poor House Bistro. This New Orleans restaurant can be found near the downtown train station. More
