Bright colors dominate this fall
THE LAST TIME that bright neon clothing was popular, so was Miami Vice, and not the 2006 remake either. The ’80s birthed Flock of Seagulls hairstyles, rolled-up jacket sleeves and neon everything, and over the course of the last few seasons, it seems all of these styles have been resurrected. More

This fall, women are eyeing their man's closet for ideas
THE “boyfriend blazer,” the “boyfriend cardigan,” “boyfriend jeans” and now the “boyfriend shirt”? It seems that this fall, every article of women’s clothing that is not elasticized into a body-skimming second skin must have been attained by raiding the closet of one’s man-friend. In fact, this “boyfriend” label gives the impression that sartorially aware ladies will only be comfortable when they’ve picked something loose and billowy off their boy toy’s bedroom floor and thrown it on before running out the door. The latest trend finds the young and hip applying face paint
BLAME IT on Lady Gaga, but face paint and outlandish makeup techniques have seen a resurgence in the Bay Area nightlife scene, with partiers cavorting around bars in looks that haven’t been popular since David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane era. Individual expression has stretched beyond the confines of the eye area. Both girls and boys are using chunky rainbow-colored glitter to highlight cheeks, eyebrows, lips and foreheads in a look that screams ’70s glam rock star. More

A new documentary looks at the famed and feared fashion editor
JUST BECAUSE you like to put on a beautiful Carolina Herrera dress or a pair of J Brand blue jeans instead of something basic from Kmart doesn’t mean you’re a dumb person.” This is one of the first sentences out of Anna Wintour’s mouth in The September Issue, the new documentary that focuses on the woman reputed to be “the pope” of high fashion. As editor of American Vogue, the most powerful and best-respected fashion magazine in the world, Wintour reigns supreme over the biggest names in the rag trade and legions of quavering assistants. Even in summer, the long skirt has its uses
WHILE SOME WOMEN chose to show serious skin during the summer months, others have opted for a more conservative yet equally sexy look. Enter the long, ankle-to-floor-length dress known as the “maxi.” The maxi was unearthed from the 1970s vault last summer, appearing on celebrities such as Jessica Simpson and Eva Longoria. It was showcased as an alternative to the sheer tops, shirt-dresses and graphic miniskirts that also became popular during the spring and summer of 2008. Designers and consumers alike couldn’t get enough of this stylish garment, and it’s back again as a 2009 summer must-have. More
