Holiday Gift Guide
Start Early...
By Jialin Luh (11/06/2006)

" Though we’ve barely just survived Halloween, stores are already inundated with “holiday” imagery and displays. I was in Target a few weeks ago and they were already selling Christmas socks! If you would rather avoid the crowds (Black Friday sales and fighting over the last PS3 console -- no thanks) and instead find unique gifts to bring that warming smile to your recipient, here are a few ideas to get you started. A Dam Shame
By Clifton Lemon (05/25/2006)

" Are dams evil? Are they necessary? What are their “hidden” costs, and, even if these costs turn out to be much greater than the supposed benefits (as is usually the case), why do we keep building them? The answers to these questions are as varied as the groups that conceive, approve, finance, construct, and operate dams, and the groups that oppose them, fight them actively, or lose their land, livelihoods, and cultures to them. Geisha -- Beyond the Painted Smile Image
Geisha -- Beyond the Painted Smile
Adding Context to Myth
By Nirmala Nataraj (07/16/2004)

" With her prominent white face makeup and elegantly flowing kimonos, the geisha is one of the most compelling and misconstrued icons in Japanese culture. The subject of the Asian Art Museum's current exhibit, Geisha-Beyond the Painted Smile, casts a decorous shadow on her own mythologized images; while there's an clear cultural context that attempts to dispel prevalent stereotypes about the geisha, the ritualized élan of her world retains its esoteric charm.
