The 01SJ Global Festival of Art on the Edge is a convergence of vision, technology and creativity that could really only come from Silicon Valley (June, 2008)
By Gary Singh (Apr 10, 2009)
THE 01SJ Global Festival of Art on the Edge—or 01SJ for short—is not one of those harebrained schemes to "put San Jose on the map," or yet another attempt to alleviate San Jose's inferiority complex. The festival isn't taking place in San Jose just because Vancouver, Venice and São Paulo all have world-renowned cultural biennials and we don't. The festival is happening here because, plain and simple, it must happen here. More

By Gary Singh (Apr 10, 2009)
IN THE Santa Clara Valley, one just doesn't see too many museum exhibits that explore embalming techniques of the Victorian era. But that's precisely one of the main components of "Ashes to Ashes: The Birth of the Death Industry"... More

By Gary Singh (Jun 11, 2009)
IN WHAT can only be described as a huge success, the second annual SubZERO festival took place all along South First Street in San Jose last week. You were either there or you missed out. Dozens and dozens of original and passionate folks displayed art, tech and innovation—not just in booths but on the street, around the trees, in the bars, upside-down, on all fours, on stages and pretty much everywhere else in the immediate vicinity of that entire three-block stretch. Without exaggeration, thousands and thousands of people showed up to partake in the proceedings. More

Steven Soderbergh directs adult star Sasha Grey in the story of a disaffected escort
By Richard von Busack (May 29, 2009)
HIRING Sasha Grey to play Chelsea, the lead in The Girlfriend Experience, is certainly more than just stunt casting by the wily Steven Soderbergh. Some critics are baffled as to whether Grey, a celebrated porn star, is an uninflected actress or a bad one. Let’s default for the former. More

By Staff (Jun 17, 2009)
THE VOTES have been tallied, and the people have spoken—the winner of Metro’s inaugural photo exhibit is San Jose photographer Jai Tanju for his black-and-white photograph of an unknown French skateboarder, appropriately named Skater. The theme of the first group show is “I Live Here.” More
