Description
The Thacher Gallery at USF begins its tenth exhibition season with “Night Blooming: Sculptures by Ann Weber” from August 4 to October 5, 2008. A public lecture and reception will take place on Thursday, September 4. The lecture will begin at 3 p.m. in the Maraschi Room, Fromm Hall with the reception following from 4 to 6 p.m. in the gallery.Using strips of flattened cardboard, staples and shellac, Ann Weber creates voluptuous, organic shapes of all scales. At the center of “Night Blooming” is a series of gourd-like sculptures titled “Strange Fruit.” Appropriate to the harvest season, Weber configures them into a moody garden that can be entered by the viewers. Introducing figures and elements from her early clay works, she brings a fairytale quality to the installation, reminding us of our vulnerability and complicated relationship with nature.
