Description

Bay Area born drumset and tabla virtuoso Sameer Gupta continues to push the envelope with his latest recording, A Circle Has No Beginning, set for release in February 2018. The album explores cultural cross-over by honoring the ensemble’s diversity and the influences of jazz, soul, Indian classical music and the electronic movement—these, along with pure spontaneity, help create a relevant and powerful statement on the power of collaboration and mindfulness towards others.

Sameer Gupta is known as one of the few percussionists simultaneously representing the traditions of American jazz and Indian classical music. He has performed at Lincoln Center, Birla Auditorium Kolkata, SFJAZZ, Nehru Centre London, Jazz at Lincoln Center, MoMA and Yerba Buena Gardens. Gupta has collaborated with artists such as Falu Shah, Rez Abbasi, Marc Cary, Wallace Roney, Karsh Kale, Pandit Krishna Bhatt, Ravi Chandra Kulur, Mysore Manjunath and Prasant Radhakrishnan. He is also a co-founder and an artistic director of the non-profit collective Brooklyn Raga Massive.

For this special performance, Gupta features a longtime colleague, the Bay Area’s own David Boyce (Broun Fellinis, The Supplicants, Black Edgar’s Musicbox) on saxophone, electronics and efx.

Personnel:
Sameer Gupta, drumset and tabla
David Boyce, saxes and efx
Jay Gandhi, bansuri flutes
Rashaan Carter, bass and efx
