The Super Bowl might be over, but Plaza de Cesar Chavez has a new lineup of events to kick off the hot summer months. City officials, the Knight Foundation and Adobe have partnered to launch Spring in Plaza de Cesar Chavez, a weekly outdoor gathering to get people out for lunch and dinners at the park.

Food trucks scheduled to take part include: 3 Greeks, Oaxacan Kitchen, Thai Thai, Soulnese, Sam’s Chowdermobile and more. New outdoor seating at the park will provide a place for families and downtown workers to enjoy the open air.

Danny Harris, program director for the San Jose branch of the Knight Foundation, says the beatification of the downtown park not only provides a comfortable space to hangout, but also encourages visitors to linger and support local businesses.

In addition to co-funding this project, the Knight Foundation, as part of its Cities Challenge, also plans to transform Post Street into a night market and increase offerings at the Mayfair Community Center. Harris says these projects are vital to “creating more vibrant dynamic places for people to come enjoy spaces in downtown San Jose.

“Millennial talents are being drawn to large cities,” he adds. “It’s important that we fund local ideas that respond to national trends while creating a strong identity in San Jose.”

Spring in Plaza de Cesar Chavez will offer its food options through May 31.
