Forget about Mickey D’s. Google can now claim that it has served over 1 billion unique visitors per month, breaking a record for any website.
According to Google exec Marissa Mayers, Google reaches a billion users each week. In other words, one out of every six people on the planet turn to Google for help every week, looking up everything from cookie recipes to information about long lost loves.
The amount of information catalogued by Google is undoubtedly remarkable. In fact, it is so vast that it requires the invention of new terms. The latest is zettabytte, or 1 billion terabytes, or 1 followed by 21 zeros.
Still, Google has to watch its back, especially with Facebook on the rise. It had, at its most recent count, 714 million visitors per month, which is considerably less, but its annual growth is still 30 percent. In other words, it could surpass Google within two years.
