San Jose State won’t be making a move to the Mountain West Conference, but it wasn’t because the Spartans got cold feet.
Instead, the conference decided Tuesday it will put off expansion for the time being, leaving SJSU in the lurch. As a member of the Western Athletic Conference, which will be losing four schools this year, SJSU will have to continue to weight its options.
Uupper-echelon schools in football and basketball continue to be wooed away from their current conferences, which is likely to result in several super-conferences. It’s unlikely SJSU will ever be invited to join these elite clubs, so the decision was surely met with disappointment here in San Jose.
