Stanford Ranked in Top 10
After demolishing UCLA and Wake Forest, Stanford (4-0) took its game to another level on Saturday, routing Notre Dame 37-14 in South Bend. The star was Owen Marecic, who scored touchdowns on offense and defense 13 seconds apart in the fourth quarter to put the Fighting Irish away.  Stanford moved to No. 9 in the AP Poll, its highest ranking since 1992. The Cardinal next travels to in Eugene to play No. 5 Oregon, which has the best scoring offense in the nation. I know it’s an October game, but this matchup could be the de facto Pac-10 Championship. Stanford knocked Oregon (4-0) out of a shot at the BCS title game last year with a 48-42 victory in Stanford, so the Ducks will be seeking revenge.

Wondolowski’s Hat Trick Pushes Earthquakes Past Toronto
Chris Wondolowski was named MLS Player of the Week after recording a hat trick in the Earthquakes 3-2 win over Toronto FC Saturday in Canada. Wondolowski now has 12 goals on the season, which puts him in a tie for third in the MLS. The ‘Quakes (11-7-6) are in a tie for fourth in the Western Conference and have the sixth best record in the MLS. The top eight team qualify for the playoffs. The ’Quakes next play the Chicago Fire on Wednesday night at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Nobody Can Stop The Press
Christen Press broke the Stanford soccer team’s career scoring record with a first-half goal that proved to be the winning goal in the No. 2 ranked Cardinal’s 2-1 victory over No. 3 Portland on Saturday at Stanford University. Press’ goal gave her 153 career points, breaking the old record set by Sarah Rafanelli. Stanford next plays Santa Clara on Sunday in Palo Alto, and Press, who has an NCAA-leading 13 goals this year, will enter that game one goal short of Rafanelli’s goal record, which stands at 40.

Utes Embarrass Spartans
The San Jose State football team was crushed by Utah 56-3 on Saturday in Salt Lake City, concluding a brutal beginning schedule. The combined record of the three teams that SJSU has played on the road thus far is 12-0, and the teams are ranked 1 (Alabama), 11 (Wisconsin) and 13 (Utah) in the AP Poll. The Spartans (1-3) next play UC Davis for their homecoming. It’s a must win if SJSU wants to even sniff a bowl game.

Women’s Soccer: UCLA Shut Outs Santa Clara
Santa Clara’s offense sputtered against UCLA leading to a 1-0 loss Saturday in Los Angeles. The Broncos have now been shut out three times this season. Next up for the Broncos is Stanford, ranked No. 2 in the nation. The Bronco defense will have its hands full attempting to stop Christen Press, the nation’s leading goal scorer.
